At approximately 07:45, on the hottest day of the year to date, the company's pagers activated for a general alarm strip mall fire, located on Rt 166. Since the fire was in the coverage area of Toms River Fire Company's No. 1 & 2 2865 was the fast team. The crew from 2865 setup the equipment necessary for their assignment and stood at the ready on the Alpha side of the structure, while an additional FAST team from another company was at the ready on the Charlie side of the structure. Crews worked within the structure to gain control of the fire, which was eluding them in the cock loft of the structure. With the aid of more than two dozen fire companies and nearly 200 personnel the fire was brought under control shortly before 10:30. By this time temperatures were well into the 90's with high humidity, plus the weight of the firefighting equipment and the additional heat of the fire, all working together to quickly tire working firefighters. Due to this an EMS Task Force responded and setup an elaborate rehab area, complete with shade, misting fans, water, and EMT's to evaluate firefighters. Berkeley Twp HAZMAT team responded to the scene to take air quality samples due to the vehicle repair garage, located in the strip mall, that was affected by the fire. 2865 cleared the scene at 12:30 and returned to the station to place their equipment back in service. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
